The Ascent starts at just $33,895, is powered by a 2.4-liter Turbocharged Boxer 4-cylinder that produces 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, achieves 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway, respectively, and has an option for either a bench or captain’s chairs in the second row for 8 or 7 passenger capacity. The larger Subaru can also tow up to 5,000 lbs when properly equipped. 

The 2023 BRZ has taken home the cost-to-own award in the sports car category. It has a base price of $28,595 and is powered by a naturally-aspirated 2.4-liter Boxer 4-cylinder that puts out 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The BRZ’s fuel mileage is very respectable at 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway, respectively. Your choice of either a 6-speed manual or automatic makes the sporty Subaru an absolute bargain for the fun and enjoyment you will have over the next 5 years of ownership. 

Subaru’s Impreza gets the same accolade in the compact car category. It can be had in either a sedan or five-door hatchback and features standard all-wheel drive for all trim levels. Its 2.0-liter Boxer 4-cylinder outputs 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque, and the vehicle as a whole is able to achieve up to 28 mpg city and 36 mpg highway, respectively. And with a base price of just $19,795, it’s a no-brainer for anyone looking for reliability, safety, and usability in one package. Subaru allow you to choose between a 5-speed manual or a CVT. 

The Subaru Forester came out ahead in the compact SUV 5-year cost-to-own category. With its starting price of just $26,495, the supposedly compact SUV features 74.2 cu.ft. of interior space with the rear seats down. Powering the Forester is a 2.5-liter Boxer 4-cylinder making 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. For less than $30,000, you can have an SUV that gets up to 26 mpg city and 33 mpg highway, respectively, while also being able to tow as much as 3,000 lbs. 

The final Subaru vehicle to receive KBB’s accolade is the 2023 Outback in the mid-size 2-row SUV category. With a starting price of just $28,895, up to 26 mpg city and 32 mpg highway, respectively, and the choice of either a 2.5-liter Boxer 4-cylinder making 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque or a 2.4-liter Turbocharged Boxer 4-cylinder outputting 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. When properly equipped the Outback is able to tow up to 3,500 lbs.
