Subaru Outback Wins Rebelle Rally Class

The 2024 Rebelle Rally is in the books and has officially been won by a factory-backed Subaru team called MtnSubi (team number 204) with driver Carey Lando and navigator Andrea Shaffer. It’s the first time a Subaru has won the event, as well as the first time Subaru sponsored a team for the event.

What Is the Rebelle Rally?
The Rebelle Rally is an annual women-only eight-day event where drivers and navigators compete in various off-road vehicles trekking across the California and Nevada deserts over more than 1,550 miles. The competition is grueling, especially since no modern technology is allowed to be used. Both driver and navigator can only use compasses, topographical maps, and the like. The Rally has been going strong since its introduction in 2016. The Subaru Outback showed how much it lives for the Rebelle Rally.
The 2024 Event
This year the rally held two separate classes: the 4×4 Class and X-Cross Class. Vehicles in the 4×4 class feature four-wheel drive with two-speed transfer cases. The X-Cross class is for vehicles that are either rear- or all-wheel drive (with no two-speed transfer cases). Each team is provided with food and lodging/base camps during the event, with professional chefs and specially crafted meals and snacks provided to each person in the rally.

A Word from Carey Lando
When team MtnSubi driver, Carey Lando, was asked why she drives a modified 2014 Subaru Outback, she said, “I’ve done so much with my car. So many people are surprised to see my car out there with Jeeps and Broncos and other 4x4s. I can hit the dirt, then enjoy a comfortable drive on the way home. I love that Subaru is a platform that can grow with me. It came to me as a commuter car and it has grown into my interests, from a mom taxi to winning the Rebelle Rally and everything in between.”

A Word from Subaru
In a congratulatory post on Instagram, Subaru said, “After 8 relentless days of precise navigation, and skill, Team MtnSubi (duo Carey Lando and Andrea Shaffer) won their race class in their Subaru Outback at the Rebelle Rally. This is not just about speed, it’s about true grit and strategy; teams must navigate the open course using only paper maps and compasses.”

A First for Subaru, But Not the First for Team MtnSubi
As previously mentioned, this is the first Subaru-backed team in Rebelle Rally history. However, team 204 is a pair of veterans. Driver Carey Lando has been doing the Rally over the last four events, while navigator Andrea Shaffer has competed in every rally except for one. She was at the inaugural 2016 event.
