Subaru, as an automaker, Subaru always engineers its cars to be safe and reliable, suitable for all environments and different drivers, and to last for years. It is common for parents to hand down an older car to their newly licensed child to drive and use for years to come.

U.S. News & World Report agrees that Subaru vehicles are excellent for new drivers, as they have given three awards to various models as the Best Cars for Teens. U.S. News & World Report is best known for publishing reports yearly on the best universities and colleges, as well as the best products and things on the current market, such as cars, hospitals, and even the best states in the US.

The 2024 Legacy sedan won the Best Car, priced between $30,000 and $35,000. The 2024 Outback won the Best SUV in the $35,000 to $40,000 range. The 2020 Crosstrek Hybrid was awarded as the Best Used SUV for Teens.

“We are pleased to receive the 2024 Best Cars for Teens award for Outback and Legacy from U.S. News & World Report. In order to qualify as a Best New or Used Car for Teens, U.S. News & World Report looks at the crash test ratings of various vehicles, reliability ratings, and driver assistance features like Forward Collision Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane-Departure Warning, Lane-Keep Assist, and teen driver controls.

U.S. News said about the 2024 Legacy winning the $30,000-$35,000 sedan category: “The Subaru Legacy is a solid midsize car that’s a great pick for teens. The Legacy receives excellent safety ratings, receiving a perfect five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA and being named as an IIHS 2024 Top Safety Pick. Combine that with its roomy and comfortable interior, and you see why the Legacy provides great value at this price point. The Legacy also has a substantial safety features package, which includes forward collision warning and lane-keep assist. Reverse automatic braking is standard if you step up to the Limited trim, helping keep your vehicle safe from rear crashes. Also available in the Limited trim is Subaru Starlink, allowing you to monitor your teen’s safety from afar.”

When discussing why the Outback won for Best SUV costing $35,000-$40,000, U.S. News said, “The Subaru Outback is a perfect choice for a teen driver within this price bracket, as it provides a comprehensive lineup of driver-assistance features and strong safety ratings. It is an IIHS 2024 Top Safety pick and received a perfect five-star overall rating from NHTSA. Some of the safety features included in the Outback are front automatic braking and lane-keep assist. However, stepping up to the Onyx trim adds standard blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and reverse automatic braking.
