Subaru Brought Out “Project Midnight” and “Huckster” to the Goodwood Festival of Speed

An event like the Goodwood Festival of Speed might be seen as a way for motorsport’s elite drivers to bring out their finest vehicles to run around their historic track or tackle the famed hill climb.

The British countryside is no stranger to Subaru. They have seen the famous WRX STi rally car driven by the WRC greats on the hill climb. The blue-and-gold livery still resonates across the memories of those who attend this event. 

Subaru Motorsports returned to Goodwood this year with two not-so-genteel entries. 

Subaru Motorsports USA’s “WRX: Project Midnight” debuted at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. Joining the dark-finished performance sedan was the fan-favorite “Subaru Family Huckster.” The reimagined 1983 Subaru GL wagon became an instant sensation among spectators during its 2022 debut, and it has kept this title for two years.

While wowing the fans, Project Midnight set the fastest Shootout time for an internal combustion engine vehicle with racing legend Scott Speed behind the wheel. The WRX placed second overall while competing against all sorts of vehicles, including rally racers, retired Formula 1 drivers, and ultra-high-powered electric vehicles. All of these drivers and vehicles competed in one category on the Shootout hill climb. 

Project Midnight is powered by a 670-horsepower turbocharged BOXER engine. This engine evolved from the one that helped Speed win the Nitro Rallycross Teams Championship for Subaru in 2021. Adding an aerodynamic kit to augment its stylish and dark-finished looks, Project Midnight was created as a purpose-built asphalt carving machine. 

Meanwhile, the Huckster and its driver, Travis Pastrana, also made the Festival of Speed their own once again. The old wagon was reinvigorated with an 862-horsepower turbocharged BOXER engine, and the wagon’s bodywork was augmented by active front/rear hydraulic aerodynamics. The Huckster is a perfect fit for Pastrana and his no-holds-barred, full-send, sideways-heavy driving style. That is why the Huckster is a fan favorite among the genteel and non-genteel attendees at Goodwood.
