How Subaru Set the Global Standard for Drone Safety

Did you know that Subaru began as an aircraft maker?

Ninety years ago, a company named Nakajima Aircraft Company was established. Over the past nine decades, it has continued building aircraft and developing aerospace technologies. Today, this is a part of Subaru’s corporate family. They currently produce attack helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles for the Japanese Self Defense Force and training aircraft for various clients. For commercial use, they build the center wings for Boeing’s wide-body airliners – the 777 and 787.

As they continue to develop aerospace technology, Subaru also infused the safety technology we see on today’s automobiles into this part of the business. Recently, they began work on a six-rotor blade flying concept car.

The application of Subaru’s safety technology has been engineered into their unmanned aerial vehicles – or drones. So much so that they received news from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that they have accepted their proposal for anti-collision standards for drones. These standards will set the rules for preventing drone collisions. 

To achieve this proposal and set new standards, Subaru partnered with Japan Radio and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization to submit their proposal to ISO. 

According to an article in Forbes Magazine, there are “six steps in the collision avoidance process used by Subaru and they include constantly checking for potential obstacles, detecting aircraft, taking evasive measures, confirming if other aircraft are approaching, returning to the original route, and proceeding along that particular route.”
