2022 Subaru Outback Earned Best Possible Rating in New IIHS Test

In 2022, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) updated its side impact crash test, setting a new standard for the industry. Through a series of in-depth changes, the IIHS made the side impact test more difficult, intense, and—most importantly—realistic. In other words, car manufacturers who wish to ace this test in the future will need to do better than ever before. Well, that is, most manufacturers will need to do better. Subaru, on the other hand, has already aced the new and improved test. That’s right, the 2022 Subaru Outback earned the best possible rating in the new IIHS side impact test.

2022 Outback Sets the Bar for Side Impact Safety Test

For the new and improved test, the IIHS selected seven popular midsize vehicles, all of which had earned ‘Good’ ratings in the most recent version of the test before the revisions. Out of these seven cars, only one was able to keep its ‘Good’ rating: the 2022 Subaru Outback. It is also worth mentioning that the ‘Good’ rating is the highest possible rating for any IIHS safety test.

In 2022, the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid, Legacy, Outback, and Ascent all earned a ‘Top Safety Pick+’ rating – the highest possible ranking from the IIHS.
